Project Notes
St. Mark Episcopal commissioned Lynchburg Stained Glass to provide a new stained-glass window portraying St. Mark the Evangelist. This window pairs with other stained glass in the sanctuary of a similar hand-painted style. We crafted the window using imported, mouth-blown glass in the traditional, leaded stained-glass process. Each piece of glass is hand-painted and kiln-fired. A winged lion, the symbol of St. Mark the Evangelist, is depicted on the gold sash of his robe.
In the window’s background scene, we subtly wove in a bit of the church’s history. Rev. Rose, the founding pastor of St. Mark, can be seen navigating a bateau of tobacco downriver to market as he once did. The rose bushes shown in the foreground celebrate the Reverend’s namesake. The original church building also nestles against the tree line on the opposite bank of the river.
Installed into a preexisting window opening, the stained-glass window measures 3-ft x 7-ft. It is protected on the exterior by new laminated safety glass.
